Hello, my name is Reza Dehshid. I’m an accountant based in London.
In this video, we’re going to talk about some of the questions a lot of people are asking at the moment about the new tax regulations, particularly Making Tax Digital, or MTD.
Many people are saying that in order to avoid the complexity of MTD, it might be better to register a limited company or move their business into a company structure
In this video, I’m going to explain what MTD actually is, who it applies to, and whether being self-employed or running a limited company is the better option for your situation
First of all, let’s be very clear about what MTD is.
Making Tax Digital is an official programme introduced by the UK tax authority. Its aim is to make the way people keep records and report their income more digital, more organised, and more accurate.
At the moment, VAT-registered businesses already submit their VAT returns digitally on a quarterly basis. That is already part of Making Tax Digital.
Now, this system is being extended to people who are self-employed and to landlords who receive property income.
From April 2026, many individuals will be required to start reporting under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.
This will first apply to people whose qualifying income for the 2024–2025 tax year is over £50,000.
From April 2027, this will be extended to those earning over £30,000.
And the government has also announced plans to reduce this threshold further in the future, potentially to £20,000, subject to legislation
To use Making Tax Digital, you must keep digital records and submit your updates using software that is compatible with the tax authority’s systems.
This usually means there will be additional costs, such as accounting software and potentially higher accountancy fees, because reporting will be more frequent.
The important thing to understand is that the main purpose of MTD is not to penalise taxpayers.
Its goal is to improve accuracy, increase transparency, and create better financial organisation. In the long run, this is intended to reduce mistakes and help people manage their tax affairs more effectively

Now let’s take a realistic look at the difference between being self-employed and running a limited company, and which option may be more suitable depending on your specific situation.

For many businesses, when annual income is around fifty to sixty thousand pounds, being self-employed is often the more practical choice. It is simpler, usually involves lower accounting costs, and requires less administration.

However, as income increases, for example beyond seventy thousand pounds, a limited company may become a better option in some situations. It can offer more flexibility in managing income, such as combining salary and dividends, and may allow for more effective tax planning.

That said, it is very important to understand that a limited company is not only about advantages. It also involves more work, higher ongoing costs, and greater legal responsibilities. Directors’ duties are more extensive, and compliance requirements are higher.

Another important point to consider is that Making Tax Digital for Corporation Tax has not yet been implemented. However, the government has confirmed that digital reporting will be extended to corporation tax in the future. For this reason, moving into a limited company should never be seen as a quick solution to avoid MTD.

Any decision to change structure should be based on a proper review of your business and your personal circumstances. Your situation should be carefully assessed so that you have a clear, targeted, and long-term strategy in place.

I would also like to highlight that Companies House has announced that from 1 February 2026, several company filing and maintenance fees will increase, including the confirmation statement fee. In some cases, submitting this earlier may help avoid higher charges.

To summarise, it is essential that your position is reviewed by a qualified accountant and that any decisions are based on professional advice tailored to your circumstances.
